The name Morgan is historically synonymous with generational reggae music, and prestigious accolades such as the coveted Grammy for Best Reggae Album. However, it was also much publicized when in 2011 the patriarch of the family made international news stemming from a marijuana arrest.
The case against the reggae star was eventually dismissed, but to the close knit Royal Family of Reggae, the event fueled their motivation to get into the legal marijuana industry. The aforementioned manifested as the culture driven band, have not only lent their voice to the future FedEx of the Marijuana industry, but also announced its HIPAA compliant marijuana delivery service partnership with Proper Rx (http://properrx.com/).
MH: Gramps Morgan
RNYC: Reggae In NYC
RNYC: Being based out of Brooklyn, what makes NYC your home base and how much time do you spend here throughout the year?
MH: Not as much as we would like to. We were born in Brooklyn, so Brooklyn is home. We like to see the projection for how things have gone in Brooklyn for the past, well we will just say 15 years, everything is changed. I was on Delancey St. yesterday where we used to shop and you can see there are all kind of high-rises about to go up on the water. It almost reminded me London and Dubai. I know what they are about to do, I can see it, because I have travelled the world, so I know there is an evolution of architecture and structure and I love it.
I would like to spend more time here but we are working. Creating our own record label, Cool To Be Conscious and then winning the Grammy as a record label that's a whole different thing then winning a Grammy as a recording artist or producer and songwriter. Now a lot more people want to work with you, a lot of people want to know what we know, as a record label. Because of working with VP Records for so many years, we taught VP a lot of things. When we were with VP they were a distributer, they weren’t a record label. We kinda said to them, wait a minute, you are behaving as a record company, why don't you be a record company and shortly after that they changed into a record company. They’ve watched us grow and see how much we have grown and say, “oh my good look at them, they have grown up.” Like their babies. It's a beautiful thing. We really want to spend some more time in New York. New York is an amazing city that doesn't’ sleep.
“Avrakedabra is one heck of an album! Great harmonies, excellentarrangements and beau coup outstanding reggae tunes. After winning a Grammy, it’s difficult to surpass expectations. But Morgan Heritage pulled it off. This album is even better than the last.” – Huffington Post
“Nearly 40 years after Marley has left the building, the reggae mantle has passed through the arch to this new generation that just plain scorches. A smoking reggae crew that has already hit it out of the park ups their game and comes in with a hotter, tighter set that owns contemporary reggae, no disrespect to Marley (whose kids show up here as well). There’s a lot of good modern reggae out there these days, but this is the gold standard.” – Midwest Record
“Few albums have the ability to captivate from the beginning to end, but this stunning new release from GRAMMY award winning reggae legends Morgan Heritage does that and more.”
– TopShelf Reggae
“…the culture-driven pop-reggae five-piece has managed to deliver yet another quality album, Avrakedabra.” – Live For Live Music
" Do you believe in magic? if not, I’m sure after listening the legendary royal reggae family Morgan Heritage eleventh studio album Avrakedabra you will see that Reggae music can cast a great spell on its listeners." - Riddim Don Magazine

This past week B.B. King’s was blessed with an amazing show put on by the royal family of reggae music, Morgan Heritage. For those who have been out of the scene for the past few months, Morgan Heritage was just awarded with the Grammy for Best Reggae Album, a well-deserved honor for their latest album, Strictly Roots. This family band made their return to their hometown of NYC to celebrate with all of us at BB King’s.
The show kicked off with great reggae vibes supplied by Synpa Movements. As the venue began to fill up, Blackalicous took the stage. The mix of an lyrical rapper opening for a roots reggae band seemed strange at first, but the audience showed their love, rapping along with Gift of Gab and Latryx Lateef as Chief Xcel laid the beats, rolling through new tracks and classic hits. They ended their set with a fast paced freestyle session and the amazing Alphabet Aerobics.
Following Blackalicious, Jamere Morgan hit the stage. By this point the crowd had filled in, ordered their drinks and were ready for some of the roots reggae they had come to see. Jamere serenaded the crowd with his new singles, kicking off the family vibe and ending with a strong version of Neighborhood Girl. This will be an artist to watch as his career grows.
Morgan Heritage hit the stage strong, shouting out their hometown of NYC, specifically Brooklyn. They worked their way through the new Strictly Roots album with the title track and others, blazing the Rockers vibe that the packed BB King’s club had come to see. As the great band that they are, they did not focus solely on new material, but took us back with some of their classic tacks, performing a beautiful version of Down By The River and Don’t Haffi Dread, that had the whole crowd singing along and swaying from side to side.
